When computers first became an integral part of business, forward-thinking companies knew they needed a computer expert on staff to keep those finicky processors functioning. As computer infrastructures grew, entire IT departments sprang up.
Today, technology is such a crucial component of doing business that a new management position, the CIO (Chief Information Officer), is now standard in many companies. But many people are still mystified by what a CIO actually does. This article will explain what a CIO typically does, highlight what you should expect from your company's CIO, and offer guidelines for when you should outsource this key role to a CIO for hire.
Responsibilities of a CIO
Because the CIO position is still relatively new, many companies have a hard time accurately defining what the job entails. In his book Unwrapping the CIO: Demystifying the CIO Position, Wayne L. Anderson describes several CIO roles, including:
1. Executive Team Member. Like other executives, the CIO contributes to the company's overall strategy, often by participating in board meetings and other long-term development seminars. They are frequently expected to develop positive working relationships with other executives.
2. Strategic Technology Direction. Eighty percent of CIOs say the most important part of their job is to help direct the company toward technological preparedness. Anderson writes that the CIO "will create a vision of your company for future use of information technology as a competitive weapon." For example, a CIO might:
--Research the development of new systems, hardware, and applications.
-- Offer thought leadership on the future of technology and how the company can best take advantage of it.
-- Keep on top of technological developments and report to the rest of the firm on market intelligence and trends.
3. Technology Maintenance & Leadership. As the person in charge of obtaining the best, most efficient equipment for workers, the CIO may:
-- Determine which new technology is worth pursuing.
-- Maintain the current IT infrastructure.
-- Enhance current systems with the integration of new technology.
4. IT Organization Management. CIOs translate new technology into profits for the company. They also:
-- Develop, execute, and maintain systems for releasing new company products.
-- Manage the IT budget, which can sometimes include millions of dollars.
-- Recruit, retain and lead the IT staff to provide the company with information security and network management.
5. Business Partnership. The CIO acts as a liaison between the IT staff and other departments and may:
-- Collaborate with Finance and Marketing departments to develop IT solutions.
-- Use technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of other departments.
Essentially, a CIO is responsible for finding ways to use technology to help the company succeed. This is why it's crucial to have a strong CIO.
CIO for Hire
For some companies, having a full-time CIO on staff may not be possible or practical. In these cases, IT leadership is sometimes outsourced to a freelance expert known as a CIO for hire. A CIO for hire can:
-- Temporarily fill in until the company can hire a permanent CIO.
-- Provide an unbiased assessment of an organization's IT problems.
-- Remain free from typical office politics or emotional entanglements.
-- Cost less than a full-time CIO.
The CIO is a critical role that will most likely be around for a while. If your company doesn't have one, or is between CIOs, a CIO for hire can be a viable solution for bringing in essential IT expertise.
